“Health” Care or “Sick” Care? (Where Does Employee Wellness Fit?)
5/05/2008 | | Share

It’s difficult to open a newspaper without reading something about our politicians – on both sides of the aisle – proposing various ways to “fix our health care system.”

One problem – and it’s a major problem – all we’re really talking about with these proposals is determining who’s going to pay for it – not how to actually fix the problem.

The problem is that what we traditionally call “health” care isn’t health care at all – it’s SICK care.  We’re waiting until individuals are sick or hurt and THEN kick in the system.  At that point, the costs are immense, and the only solution remaining is figuring out how to pay for it.

On the other hand, if we were to focus instead on truly assisting individuals in improving their health, the costs would actually be lower – much lower – over the long haul.

Fortunately, many employers “get it.”  They understand that both health care and disability costs (not to mention areas like sick time, recruitment and retention) can be positively impacted by implementing opportunities for employees to actually take better care of their HEALTH, and not just their illness.

Progress, thankfully.  Now if someone would just pass the word to our politicians?
