Quick update as promised on this short-term eating journey we’re walking with our daughter. We’re now just about 2 weeks in at this point. Similar feelings persist – I miss the stuff I’m used to eating. I occasionally catch myself staring a bit longingly at something on our shelves that is off limits for now (cue the violin music). And at a friend’s birthday party Saturday night, the discipline levels had to be launched to new levels to resist all the great foods and wine available (water and a carrot? Sure!). But it’s getting a little easier. My lunches have been delicious, consisting of a spinach, avocado, onion, cucumber salad with olive oil, salt and pepper along with salmon or similar fish. I’ve tried taking a giant smoothie and 2 bananas with me on a 3 hour ride and while still not strong the last hour, it was better. It’s just a good reminder how difficult it is for any of us, certainly myself included, to break long-standing habits. We get used to certain things – we LIKE certain things. Certain foods are (unfortunately) our answer to some of life’s issues. And breaking away from those is tough! This Wednesday, we remove all meats (including fish, turkey, chicken, etc) for a period of 8 days, representing a new challenge. Fortunately we add back in almonds and rice, which I’m very much looking forward to doing (rice cakes, almond butter, almond milk for smoothies, etc). It’s nice the plan put those two together on the schedule ;- ) Until next time!
